Map data

The derivative database, under the ODbL

Amsterdam Underground does not ship a picture of the map only — it ships the map data itself. That makes it a derivative database of OpenStreetMap, and the licence then requires us to make it available under the same terms. Here it is.

Download

amsterdam-underground-kaartgegevens-odbl.zip — 3.4 MB, eight data files (10.0 MB unpacked), with the licence, a readme and a manifest listing the SHA-256 of every file.

The files in the archive are byte for byte the ones that ship inside the app. The manifest is there so you can check that rather than take our word for it.

No conditions, no form, no e-mail needed. This page used to say you could request the data from the helpdesk. A download replaced that, because article 4.6 of the ODbL asks that a machine-readable copy be offered, and an offer you have to ask for is a weaker offer than a button.

What it is

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. The OpenStreetMap copyright page explains what the licence asks of you.

The data is not in degrees but in metres on a flat plane, with the north-west corner of the map as the origin: x runs east, y runs south. It was pulled from OpenStreetMap through the Overpass API, clipped to the ring road, converted, simplified, and supplemented with things that do not come from OpenStreetMap — where cars are parked, for instance. Those additions travel along because they sit in the same files; the ODbL covers the whole.

The archive describes every file. In short: two world files (the small map and the whole city inside the ring road), two files holding the water edges a car collides with, the raw OpenStreetMap output for the traffic lights and for the neighbourhood areas, the game's ten neighbourhoods, and the tile grid of the phone map.

What is not in it, and why not

The ground tiles. Those are 6,798 images drawn from this data, and in the language of the licence a produced work. For those, article 4.3 asks for a notice alongside the work — which sits in the corner of the screen while you play and on the Credits screen — and not for share-alike. Anyone who wants the tiles does not need them either: with this data they can be rasterised again.

Anything that does not come from OpenStreetMap is not in here either: the vehicles, the façades, the roofs, the characters, the sound and the code are our own work or carry their own licence. Those are listed under credits and licences.

What you may do with it

Everything the ODbL allows: use it, change it, pass it on, including commercially. Three conditions, and the licence text prevails over this summary:

  • Attribute. Say that the data comes from OpenStreetMap contributors and is under the ODbL.
  • Share alike. If you pass on an adapted database, do so under the same licence.
  • Keep open. If you add technical restrictions, a version without them must also be available.
